SAN DIEGO – LAWFUEL – Law News Network – Foley & Lardner LLP announced today that Victor A.Vilaplana has joined its San Diego office as a member of the Litigation Department and the Business Reorganizations Practice.

“Victor will strengthen our Business Reorganizations Practice both nationally and on the West Coast,” said Jon Wilson, chair of the firm’s Litigation Department. “His depth of experience will greatly enhance our ability to provide counsel on cross-border bankruptcy matters and international business transactions, particularly in Latin America.”

The addition of Vilaplana is the next step in Foley’s strategic plan to further develop and expand our national and international business reorganizations practice.

This announcement follows the addition of American Bankruptcy Institute (ABI) Chairman Michael P. Richman as chair of the firm’s national Business Reorganizations Practice and the appointment of partner Judy O’Neill as vice chair.

Vilaplana, 59, joins Foley from Seltzer Caplan McMahon Vitek. Previously, he served as managing partner of the San Diego office of Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton. Vilaplana focuses his practice on insolvency matters, particularly complicated business bankruptcies and international transactions. He has extensive experience representing creditors’ committees and debtors’ committees in medium- to large-scale chapter 11 bankruptcies and cross-border bankruptcies, and has represented Latin American companies in restructurings, and the purchase and sale of real estate.

Vilaplana is active in the San Diego legal community and is a member of the Business Bankruptcy Committee and the International Business Law Committee of the American Bar Association (ABA), a member of the Insolvency Committee for the State Bar of California and an advisor on the Transnational Insolvency Project for the American Law Institute (ALI).

He is a frequent lecturer on insolvency, uniform commercial code, U.S.-Mexico related issues, and debtor and creditor relations. He also received the ALI-ABA Lecturer Award for his presentations on the Bankruptcy Abuse and Consumer Protection Act of 2005.

Vilaplana earned his juris doctorate from Stanford University. He also received a bachelor’s degree, with honors, from San Diego State University and a master’s degree, with highest honors, from George Washington University.
