Winston-Salem (December 11) – Kilpatrick Stockton announced today that former State Senator Cal Cunningham an attorney on the firm’s Litigation practice group, has been selected by the German Marshall Fund (GMF) to receive one of its prestigious 2007 Marshall Memorial Fellowships. The Raleigh-based International Affairs Council (IAC) served as the coordinator for North Carolina recipients.
The Marshall Memorial Fellowship Program is a program of The German Marshall Fund of the United States (www.gmfus.org) that brings emerging U.S. leaders to Brussels, Northern Europe, Southern Europe, Eastern Europe and Berlin. Throughout three weeks of seminars, travel and informal discussions – hosted by European alumni – Fellows become acquainted with Europe’s diverse political, economic and social traditions, as well as the ongoing project of European unification. All candidates were nominated for consideration by a recognized leader in the community and were required to submit a written application as well as undergo an interview by a panel of regional civic leaders and former Marshall Fellows.
Past Fellows include two European Prime Ministers, members of European parliaments and various U.S. state and national political leaders, editors of major newspapers and executives in the non-profit and business sectors. This year’s 57 national recipients include fourteen elected and senior government officials, ten attorneys in private practice, program officers from six foundations, including the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and business leaders from Cisco, J.C. Penny, Wachovia and Eli Lilly.
Mr. Cunningham’s legal practice focuses on conflict resolution and litigation in complex business disputes, including construction, real estate, environmental and contract cases. Cunningham is a former member of the North Carolina State Senate where he served as the Vice Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. He currently serves as a Captain in the U.S. Army Reserve Judge Advocate General’s Corps. He received both his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a masters degree from the London School of Economics.
