Boulder CO – January 25, 2007 – LAWFUEL – Tax Law News – Boulder Publishers, Inc. announced the publication of a new breakthrough book, U.S. Taxation of Foreign Portfolio Investors, (ISBN: 0-9779172-0-7) for the fastest growing area of international finance: the taxation of foreign portfolio investors. This unique book originates from a Boston author because of the city’s long standing position as a dominant international financial, trade and law center.
The author, Len Schneidman, is in the Boston office of Pepper Hamilton LLP, a 450 attorney AmLaw100 firm. Before joining Pepper Hamilton, he was a partner with Foley Hoag, LLP, where he had been chairman of that firm’s Taxation Department. He counsels foreign clients on the tax-efficient structuring of their investments in the United States; counsels domestic and foreign clients on U.S. federal income tax planning for their intellectual property assets; and advises clients with regard to federal income tax planning for domestic and cross-border transactions. He served for two years as an attorney-advisor to Judge Graydon G. Withey of the United States Tax Court.
Mr. Schneidman is co-chair of the Task Force on International Tax Reform of the American Bar Association and a former chairman of the Committee on U.S. Activities of Foreign Taxpayers and Tax Treaties. He also is a frequent lecturer on tax and related topics. He is listed in The Best Lawyers in America; Euromoney’s Guide to the Leading U.S. Tax Lawyers; and Chambers USA – America’s Leading Lawyers for Business.
Mr. Schneidman received his LL.M. in Taxation from New York University School of Law in 1966, his LL.B. from Harvard Law School in 1965, and his B.A. from Hobart College in 1962. He is a member of the Massachusetts and New York bars.
In a major independent survey completed only two months ago, over 200 lawyers working for large companies identified international law as the hottest practice area in 2007. Len’s book is right on the cutting edge of that prediction. In his foreword to the book, William W. (Rusty) Park, Law Professor at Boston University said, “Len Schneidman’s superb book provides an excellent roadmap … the book takes advantage of modern technology, and includes two CD-ROMS with translations of the index and table of contents into seven languages … a treasure of information and explanation … a superb accomplishment.” Monthly the author delivers an Update Service that provides the latest commentaries on changes to the tax rules and case law.
This book is evidence of Boston’s increasing importance as an international financial center. The world IS getting flatter and Boston continues its historically preeminent position. In acknowledgement, Mr. Schneidman noted, “This city has had the longest standing and most historic position in international trade and investment of any city in America. When America was still a frontier, Boston had more transatlantic clipper ship sailings than the rest of America combined. In fact, Boston had them before most of the rest of U.S. cities existed. We will continue that tradition of international prominence.”
As every Bostonian knows Boston has a long history as one of the most important worldwide international trade and financial centers. This started right after the Revolution when Boston quickly became one of the world’s wealthiest international trading ports because it was the closest major American port to Europe. Indeed, Boston is the oldest continually active major port in the Western Hemisphere though it did not become an international cargo port until 1630.
The author, Len Schneidman, lives in Medfield. His daughter Annie, is a student at Williams College and a well known intercollegiate doubles tennis player. One of his sons, John, is a Vice-President of Lehman Brothers. His other son, Peter, manages the Racket Lake Children’s Camp in the Adirondacks.
