Paul Majurey has been at logger heads with newly elected Auckland mayor Wayne Brown, who has sought his and his board’s resignation of the Auckland Council’s property arm.

But Majurey, of law firm Atkins Holm Majurey, has not bowed at time of publication to any such request. A new entrant to the power list he has headed Treaty negotiations and settlements for 12 iwi in tribal collectives, apart from chairing a maunga authority, Auckland Council’s property arm, a $115 million iwi investment fund and a tribal group that has partnered with a leading developer to build more than 500 new Auckland apartments.
Paul Francis Majurey of Marutūāhu (Ngāti Maru, Ngāti Whanaunga, Ngāti Tamaterā, Ngāti Pāoa), 59, is one of the most powerful, successful Māori lawyers, who, for 36 years, has advanced mana whenua interests, including holding the Crown to Tiriti o Waitangi promises, and heads a number of influential statutory authorities.
The son of a nurse/shearing gang rousie and shearer, Majurey’s involvement in major property deals continues apace. The recently-announced “village within a city, an urban kāinga” of 40 new apartment buildings with more than 3000 units on land within the established suburb of Ōwairaka Mt Albert was announced by him who announced a scheme with Ockham Residential for the newly-created, newly-named suburb, Maungārongo beside Unitec and the old Carrington Hospital.
The Marutūāhu-Ockham Partnership plans work in the next 20 years within the larger Te Auaunga Precinct: nearly 40ha around the ex-hospital and neighbouring university being developed by three rōpū – Marutūāhu, Waiohua-Tāmaki and Ngāti Whātua Ōrakei.
