HONOLULU, Aug. 2 LAWFUEL – The Law Newswire — “Viva La Mexico,” exclaimed Duane
“Dog” Chapman, star of the number one rated A&E show “Dog the Bounty
Hunter,” expressing his appreciation for the Mexican legal system, as all
charges against him were dismissed by the First Criminal Court in Puerto
Vallarta, Mexico, earlier this week.
Chapman, his son Leland and blood brother, Tim Chapman, were charged
with depravation of liberty, after they famously captured Max Factor heir
and convicted rapist, Andrew Luster, in Mexico, in 2003. Luster was wanted on rape charges in the United States, and is now serving a 124-year jail
sentence. Bounty hunting is illegal in Mexico and Chapman and his team had to spend nearly two weeks in jail and face the severe charges against them.
The court dismissed all of the charges because the statute of
limitation on the criminal counts pending against them had expired, said
Alberto Zinser and Jim Quadra, Mexican and U.S. attorneys for the Chapman
family. In turn, all the pending charges were effectively cancelled.
Chapman and his fellow hunters were awarded “absolute and immediate
freedom” by the Mexican court.
Chapman recently released an autobiography, “You Can Run but You Can’t Hide,” which chronicles his life fighting crime and personal accounts of some of his greatest bounty hunts, including Andrew Luster. Chapman will appear on Larry King Live on Friday at 9 p.m. ET, 6 p.m. PT to discuss the nerve-racking trial, his autobiography and his intriguing personal life.
With the court’s decision, Chapman can return to a life of fighting
crime instead of battling charges. And for “Dog,” that’s the greatest way
to celebrate his freedom.
