Stanley Schlitter Added as New Partner in Firm’s Chicago Office
LAWFUEL – (February 18, 2008, Chicago, IL) – Steptoe & Johnson LLP, a leading international law firm, has announced the addition of Stanley A. Schlitter as a partner in its rapidly growing national Intellectual Property practice.
Mr. Schlitter will be resident in Steptoe’s Chicago office. As the first IP partner for Steptoe in the Midwest, Mr. Schlitter will spearhead expansion of the firm’s IP practice in that region.
“Adding Stan to our ranks in Chicago helps us expand the geographic reach and the technical depth of our IP practice,” said Alfred M. Mamlet, Steptoe’s firmwide Intellectual Property practice leader. “His electrical engineering qualifications and work experiences in that field are a definite asset as well as a competitive advantage for Steptoe as we continue to build out our national patent litigation practice.”
Mr. Schlitter was formerly a Chicago-based partner and firmwide Vice-Chair of the IP Group at Jenner & Block, where his practice focused on patent litigation. His recent cases have involved electronics, writable DVDs, flat panel/liquid crystal displays, semiconductor devices, consumer appliances, electric power plant circuit protection design and nuclear power plant technology. His expertise extends to counseling clients about patent infringement issues in pending litigation matters and licensing negotiations, as well as litigation and licensing avoidance by designing around patents. Earlier this year, Mr. Schlitter obtained a favorable jury verdict for Gemtron Corporation against Saint-Gobain Corporation in a patent trial in Michigan.
Mr. Schlitter counsels clients regarding patents for a wide range of products and product components, including semiconductor devices, electronics, computer hardware and software, e-commerce business methods, manufacturing machinery, and aerospace vehicles. In addition, he maintains a transactional practice that includes patent and technology licensing, computer software, trademarks and copyrights, and intellectual property transfers associated with corporate acquisitions.
“I’m excited about the opportunity to grow my practice as a part of Steptoe’s expanding national and international IP platform,” said Mr. Schlitter. “This is a very dynamic firm with great resources to support corporations of all sizes in the Midwest and around the globe. I look forward to contributing to the rapid expansion of our client base while maintaining the high-quality of service for which this firm has long been noted.”
Mr. Schlitter is active in the American Intellectual Property Law Association, the Intellectual Property Law Association of Chicago, the American Bar Association, Chicago Bar Association and the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers. A 1977 graduate of the University of Iowa Law School, Mr. Schlitter earned a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Iowa State University in 1972. For two years prior to entering law school, he was an electrical engineer at Boeing in Seattle, Washington.
“Stan is a solid addition to our Chicago office; his arrival provides excellent momentum for the further build out of our IP practice nationwide,” said Roger Warin, Steptoe’s Chairman. “We are very enthusiastic about his expertise in patent litigation, and about the foundation he provides Steptoe for recruiting other high performing IP partners and associates in Chicago.”
Steptoe’s national IP practice includes more than 60 lawyers. In 2007, the firm expanded its IP practice in the Century City office with the addition of ten lawyers. As it continues to grow this practice in Chicago, Steptoe is strongly committed to the further development of its intellectual property capabilities firmwide.
