Talking Politics At Work – Appropriate Political Activities in the Workplace

The Association of Corporate Counsel & WeComply Offer Free Ethicall Phone Message on

March 10, 2008 (Washington, DC) – LAWFUEL – The political climate is heating up and as candidates publicly unleash barbs at one another, employees, too may be openly vocal about their political preferences. While many employees actively campaign for their favorite candidates, they may not be aware that some political activities are inappropriate (if not prohibited) in the workplace. To ensure that companies and their employees have a better understanding of what activities are and are not permitted, the Association of Corporate Counsel (“ACC”), in tandem with its Alliance partner for training, WeComply, is offering a free three-minute “Ethicall” phone message to provide guidance on appropriate political activity allowed at work.

“With so much of the public attention turned to the election this year, it is important for employees to know their company policy on discussing politics at work,” explained ACC President Fredrick J. Krebs. “This call provides corporate executives with a simple way to educate their employees about policies that prohibit them from using company time and resources to engage in excessive campaigning or displays of political affiliation.”

The interactive training includes hypothetical scenarios of company violations and acceptable activities, and allows callers to provide feedback on which actions are in compliance with their company’s policies. Callers will hear the definition of personal political activity, including contributing to candidates and political parties, volunteering personal time to a campaign, or seeking public office.

“We created the Ethicall to reach employees outside the usual email channel, explains David Simon, WeComply’s President. “The Ethicall phone message is simple, easy to remember and allows employees to share their feedback.”

A dedicated 800# is provided to those companies interested in offering the guidelines to their company’s employees. Both the standard message and dedicated 800# are free to ACC members and their companies; customized versions of the phone message can be provided at an additional charge. The text for the “friendly reminder to act responsibly” message can also be downloaded for companies to communicate via Email if they prefer.

The “Politics at Work” Ethicall will be available through April 30, 2008, and can be heard online at www.wecomply.com/home/pages/summaries/ethicall2a.htm.
