Chris Finlayson, the likely next Attorney General under the new Key Government, has risen rapidly through the National Party ranks and will likely place a significant part in shaping legal developments in the years ahead.
A former Bell Gully partner, who left for the Bar in 2003, Finlayson has considerable experience in the Treaty settlements area and is on record as saying he would move to appoint “more powerful” negotiators to deal with iwi.

He has also been National’s shadow Arts and Culture Minister, another portfolio he will doubtless collect.
Finlayson has been National’s shadow Attorney General, an office held by Labour’s deputy prime minister the non-lawyer Michael Cullen.
Finlayson grew up in Wellington, and was educated at St. Patrick’s College, where he was head prefect. Finlayson graduated with a BA in Latin and French and a Masters Degree in Law LLM) from Victoria University. He has taught civil procedure for LLB, conflict of laws both for LLB and for LLM, intellectual property for LLB (Hons) and ethics for LLB.
