NEW YORK (January 12 – LAWFUEL) – Kilpatrick Stockton, leading international law firm, announced today that Frederick L. Whitmer has joined the firm’s fast-growing New York office. Mr. Whitmer, previously co-chair of the Intellectual Property Litigation Practice Group at Thelen Reid Brown Raysman & Steiner, will be a partner in the Kilpatrick Stockton’s internationally-recognized Intellectual Property Department.
Mr. Whitmer is the sixth new attorney to recently join Kilpatrick Stockton’s New York office, including the firm’s Litigation Department Chair, Mike Crisp, who transferred to New York from the Atlanta office at the beginning of the year.
“Frederick is another outstanding addition to the firm’s leading Patent Litigation Team and to our expanding New York office,” said Georges Nahitchevansky, New York Office Managing Partner and Intellectual Property Department Partner. “He has been a key player in some of the country’s top patent litigation decisions and continues to be a major force in this dynamic area of law. His breadth of experience in the courtroom, cutting across numerous areas of law and industry, will make him a resource for clients firm-wide.”
“I’m very excited about joining the dynamic and successful Patent Litigation Group at Kilpatrick Stockton and look forward to working with my new partners to achieve success for the Firm’s clients,” said Mr. Whitmer.
Mr. Whitmer has achieved prominence in the courtroom and has broad experience in all aspects of intellectual property, general and civil litigation. His experience in intellectual property litigation has involved technologies for a variety of clients across a broad spectrum of industries. Mr. Whitmer’s experience in recent years has concentrated extensively on patent infringement cases, representing both patent holders and those accused of infringement. He has tried patent and other intellectual property cases to successful verdict and appeal for nearly three decades in courts around the country in cases before both judges and juries. Mr. Whitmer’s experience in patent and other technology cases has spanned many types of technologies, ranging from the simple mechanical to complex computer software and systems patents, to medical devices and chemical products.
Mr. Whitmer’s overall litigation experience is, however, not limited to patent cases, or even intellectual property cases, though that has been his principal focus in recent years. His general litigation experience has also involved several publicly prominent matters, including antitrust, telecommunications, libel, press rights, privacy issues, trade secrets (again across a broad range of technologies), as well as theft of ideas. Mr. Whitmer has litigated complex matters on behalf of Fortune 100 clients, throughout the country and abroad, both before juries and before courts sitting without a jury.
Mr. Whitmer is also a frequent speaker at various professional functions concerning topics of interest in litigation and particularly patent infringement. He is also the author of a book published by West LegalWorks, entitled Litigation Is War. This book explores litigation strategy based on concepts of military strategy derived from the classic strategy book, Clausewitz’s On War. In addition, Mr. Whitmer is the author of an extensive chapter on patent litigation in Information Technology Litigation, Law and Analysis, published by American Lawyer Media, which covers various aspects of intellectual property litigation in the information technology area.
Mr. Whitmer earned his J.D. from Columbia University Law School where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar. He earned his. B.A., cum laude, from Wabash College and a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Mr. Whitmer was also a Woodrow Wilson Fellow in German history.
In November, Kilpatrick Stockton received top honors at the 2008 World Leaders International Intellectual Property Awards. Kilpatrick Stockton was recognized as the overall top Intellectual Property Firm in North America and as the top Trademark Firm in North America.
