Attorney from FDA’s Office of Chief Counsel Joins Firm’s FDA Practice
(April 29, 2009 Washington, D.C.) – Reed Smith LLP, one of the 15 largest law firms in the world, today announced the addition of Jennifer Goldstein as Counsel in the firm’s Life Sciences Health Industry Group. She will be resident in the firm’s Washington, D.C., office, effective immediately.
Ms. Goldstein comes to Reed Smith from the FDA where she served as Associate Chief Counsel in the Office of the General Counsel, Food and Drug Division for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). She advised HHS, the Office of the Commissioner of the FDA, and the Center for Drugs Evaluation and Research (CDER) on various issues, including drug safety, risk evaluation and mitigation strategies, clinical investigations, controlled substances, internet pharmacies, over-the-counter drug products, electronic records and general compliance matters. Jennifer has experience reviewing and advising on proposed and final federal regulations, guidance documents, interpreting the federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act and the Controlled Substances Act, and related federal regulations. In addition to her work on issues involving drug products, Jennifer has worked on matters involving FDA regulation of medical devices, foods, dietary supplements, and cosmetics.
“We are delighted to have Jennifer bring her insight about the FDA to Reed Smith,” said Carol Loepere, Vice Chair of the firm’s Life Sciences Health Industry Group. “She brings us a great deal of knowledge regarding the agency, in addition to her expertise about both FDA compliance and regulatory matters. At a time when the FDA is increasing its regulatory and enforcement initiatives, including actions addressing emerging technologies, Jennifer will be a key part of our Life Sciences and Health Industry team to serve our clients’ FDA regulatory and compliance needs.”
“I am looking forward to returning to private practice after six years in the public sector,” said Ms. Goldstein. “Reed Smith has an exceptional reputation and record of service in the life sciences and healthcare industries. I am eager to work with the other talented members of the firm’s life sciences group to further clients’ interests within the wide range of regulatory and compliance matters this group addresses.”
A 1996 graduate of Marshall-Wythe School of Law at the College of William and Mary, Ms. Goldstein was formerly an associate at Patton Boggs LLP and Keller and Heckman LLP. She was a judicial clerk in the Thirty-First Judicial Circuit of Virginia, a five-judge general jurisdiction court.
Ms. Goldstein is a contributing author to Dietary Supplements and Functional Foods: A Practical Guide to FDA Regulation, published in 2001. Her pro bono activities include serving as guardian ad litem for children in abuse and neglect matters in the District of Columbia Superior Court.
