Which law firms are hiring in the US – which are not? The WSJ Law Blog put together a chart based on a Chambers Associates’ survey showing the summer and first-year associates hirings. Davis Polk come in as number one.

“The ranks of summer associates were larger in 2012 than in 2011 at more than half the firms surveyed. But at the same time, firms were more likely than not to have smaller first-year classes in 2012 compared with 2011. The Chambers data on summer associates go back to 2008 and the data on first-year associates to 2009. We looked at the percentage change from those years to 2012, as well as the percentage change from last year to this one.

A couple of important caveats: For the starting associate class of 2012, some of the numbers are estimates provided by the firms. If a firm estimated a range — say 35 to 40 hires — we only included the higher number. The starting class numbers also include deferrals and judicial clerks, in some cases.”

Whatever the results of the WSJ hiring poll, the topsy-turvy law hiring market continues its rocky road.
