APlusA.org.uk is always involved in education, but now we are undertaking a more formal study of it. Starting soon, our writers will examine the history of education, especially in the USA. One goal is to broaden our writers’ understanding of the educational system as it exists now, in light of several centuries of development. This should make the APlusA.org.uk team more effective in meeting the needs of our customers, enrolled in this self-same educational system. The other goal is to prepare our writers to address topics in the academic field of History of Education.
Starting with the colonial ‘dame schools’, US communities, largely Protestant, ensured literacy and numeracy among at least the male population, and, increasingly, the female, as well. From the ill-fated Henricopolis College of Jamestown, Virginia (founded 1618, only 11 years after settlement, burned 1622), to the University of Pennsylvania, founded in 1740, and on to the present day, advanced education was another major goal for fledgling colonies
Today, American educational institutions rank among the world’s best, although subject to wide-ranging criticism. APlusA.org.uk staff writers will address how the US educational system arose, and how arrived to the point where it stands today.
Of particular interest will be the development of scientific and technical education in the States. Most colleges offer Bachelor of Science degrees in clearly non-liberal arts fields, with the exception of MIT. APlusA.org.uk writers will learn how various academic disciplines differentiated themselves over time and acquired academic autonomy; for example, BioEngineering.
This initiative is only the most recent of APlusA.org.uk’s efforts to enhance our writers’ ability to address topics across an encyclopedic range of human knowledge and inquiry.
