DLA Piper’s Paul Tiburzi Named to Matt Birk’s HIKE Foundation Executive Board
(Baltimore) November 11, 2010 – DLA Piper announced today that Matt Birk’s HIKE Foundation has named Paul Tiburzi, managing partner of DLA Piper’s Baltimore office, to its executive board.
Matt Birk, a center for the Baltimore Ravens, established the HIKE Foundation in 2002 to provide at-risk children with the educational opportunities needed to excel in the classroom and in life. The foundation offers interactive programs and resources to guide Baltimore children through the key educational transitions between elementary, middle, high school and college. “HIKE” stands for Hope, Inspiration, Knowledge and Education.
“Matt Birk is a hero in every sense of the word. His literacy initiatives have had a strong impact on Baltimore children’s educational achievement and I am honored and excited to work with the HIKE Foundation’s distinguished board to further this success,” said Tiburzi. “DLA Piper has long been committed to pro bono work to improve educational outcomes, and working with this inspiring organization affords me a great opportunity to extend this service to the community.”
In addition to Tiburzi’s work with the HIKE Foundation, DLA Piper’s Baltimore office has dedicated time and resources to numerous education-related initiatives through the firm’s national pro bono project, Advancing Education’s Promise. In one such project, the Baltimore office provides free legal services to the families and students of four Baltimore city schools with high enrollments of at-risk children. The attorneys also speak with student and parent groups about areas of the law that impact their everyday lives. The Baltimore office’s pro bono work is one component of Advancing Education’s Promise, which focuses on making a difference in public education throughout the many communities the firm serves.
At DLA Piper, Tiburzi serves as managing partner of the Baltimore office and chair of the State Legislative and Public Policy practice. His practice focuses on sports law and public law matters. Tiburzi currently serves on the board of directors of the Greater Baltimore Committee, the region’s most important business advocacy group. In 2007 and 2008, he served as chairman of the Camden Yards Sports and Entertainment Commission.
