After 12 years in prison for the murder of his family members, David Bain is released on bail to cheers from over 200 supporters in the Christchurch High Court gallery.

This follows the quashing of Bain’s convictions by the Privy Council last week when the Court held there had been a miscarriage of justice.

Bain was sentenced to 16 years in prison after being found guilty in May 1995 of murdering his mother Margaret, his father Robin, sisters Arawa, 19, and Laniet, 18, and brother Stephen, 14.

Today, Justice John Fogarty ruled that David Bain be released on bail to live Joe Karam’s property in Te Kauwhata, south of Auckland.

Bail conditions include: that Bain be accompanied by another at the property; that he does not contact with his extended family or witnesses in the case. He does not have to report to police.
