LAWFUEL – The Legal Newswire – US President George W. Bush will announce Monday that he has decided to name retired federal judge Michael Mukasey as his new attorney general, a senior administration official said.
“Judge Mukasey has a wealth of legal and judicial experience, and has a superb reputation for his fairness, intellect, and dedication to public service,” the official said.
Mukasey will replace Alberto Gonzales, who resigned late last month after a tenure marred by critics’ claims he was incompetent, hid the truth and may be guilty of perjury.
Gonzales was at the center of a row over the controversial firing of federal prosecutors, a decision that made him the target of a barrage of criticism from both Democrats and Republicans in Congress.
