Auckland litigation boutique Grimshaw & Co has been ordered to pay costs of $1.02 million on top of a $3.3 million damages award for negligence in advice provided to a body corporate, together with interest.

The law firm had achieved a $20.1 million win for their clients over a leaky building claim in respect of a Takapuna apartment block, but earlier this year the firm lost a claim for negligence brought against the firm, which has specialised in insurance and leaky building claims.
The owners of apartments in the 23-level Spencer On Byron in Takapuna won the court case against Grimshaw & Co, who bill themselves as leading dispute resolution lawyers specialising in building defect claims. They acted for the building owners since 2008.
The latest order was made in November by newly-appointed High Court Judge Justice Kiri Tahana. Her judgment said that the defence to the claim lacked merit.
