DENVER (LAWFUEL) – David M. Gaouette, of Lakewood, Colorado, has been appointed Acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Colorado by the United States Department of Justice. Gaouette took over the U.S. Attorney responsibilities at 12:01 am on Saturday, January 10, 2009. Former United States Attorney Troy Eid resigned effective midnight, Friday, January 9, 2009. Eid has left government service to focus on his private law practice.
Gaouette, who was First Assistant U.S. Attorney, has been appointed to serve until August 7, 2009 or until a presidentially nominated United States Attorney is confirmed by the U.S. Senate. Gaouette has been with the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Colorado for 20 years.
In 1976 Gaouette received his undergraduate degree from Florida State University. He received his law degree from the University of Denver in 1982. Before becoming an attorney, Gaouette was a police agent (officer) with the Lakewood Police Department from 1976 until 1984. In November 1984, Gaouette became an Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Columbia, where he served in the trial, grand jury, and appellate divisions.
In 1989, Gaouette became an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Colorado, assigned to the Mountain States Drug Task Force. While with the District of Colorado, Gaouette has been the Deputy Coordinator of the West Central Region of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF), the Chief of the Drug Task Force Division, Deputy Chief of the Criminal Division, Executive Assistant U.S. Attorney, and First Assistant U.S. Attorney. He is admitted to practice law in the United States Court of Appeals, for the Tenth and District of Columbia Circuits, the District of Columbia Court of Appeals, the United States District Court of Colorado, and the Colorado Supreme Court.
Gaouette is married with two sons.
