“Their unrivaled knowledge and experience will greatly benefit our clients in US-Japan patent matters.”
(Tokyo and Los Angeles) November 9, 2010—DLA Piper today announced that Henry Koda and William L. Androlia have both joined the firm’s Intellectual Property and Technology (IPT) practice as Senior Counsel in Tokyo and Los Angeles. They join the firm from Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, LLP.
Koda, a Japanese authority on US patent law who has written 15 books and over 150 articles, opened Quinn Emmanuel’s Tokyo office and is now Manager of the Tokyo Intellectual Property Group at DLA Piper. His practice focuses on patent litigation/prosecution, and includes all aspects of international trade practice and high technology patent practice, including US-Japan patent, trademark and copyright litigations/applications, search, infringement analyses, and licensing. Androlia has an active international trade and high technology practice, including US-Japan patent, trademark, and copyright applications, searches, infringement analyses, licensing, and litigation and will work together with Koda to enhance and expand DLA Piper’s Tokyo Intellectual Property Group.
“Henry and Bill have built a thriving patent litigation, prosecution and counseling practice over the 30 years they have worked together, and their unrivaled knowledge and experience will greatly benefit our clients in US-Japan patent matters,” said J. Terence O’Malley, DLA Piper US Managing Partner. “Their arrival underscores that DLA Piper is one of few firms that can offer clients world-class lawyers nearly anywhere in the world where they do business, and provide practitioners the resources they need to seamlessly serve their multi-national clients.”
In August, DLA Piper announced the addition of Richard de Bodo’s 20-member team to DLA Piper’s Intellectual Property and Technology, Patent Litigation and Patent Prosecution practices in the US. De Bodo’s team together with Koda and Androlia add technical depth and experience to the firm’s electronics, life sciences, pharmaceutical, chemistry, biologics, and Internet practices, and also significant knowledge and experience in litigating and trying Hatch-Waxman and biologics cases, representing Japanese electronics and pharmaceutical companies, and representing Internet companies. The team includes lawyers and patent professionals who are fluent in both Japanese and English, with members in Los Angeles working seamlessly with the firm’s IPT team members located in Asia led by Matt Glynn, Partner and Head of Intellectual Property and Technology, Asia, Middle East and Africa. Glynn has recently relocated from the firm’s Dubai office to Hong Kong.
“The addition of Henry and Bill represents our ongoing commitment to the growth of our top-rated global Intellectual Property and Technology practice,” said John Allcock, Global Co-Chair of DLA Piper’s Intellectual Property and Technology practice. “They bring with them a deep pool of contacts, including major Japanese corporations, and combined with the firm’s global network and the recent addition of Rich’s team, will be integral in strengthening our capabilities throughout the region.”
“We are very pleased that Henry Koda has joined us in Tokyo. Japanese companies are truly multi-national and have enormous patent and other IP needs throughout the globe. Henry’s addition adds strong depth to our existing Japan IP practice,” said Lance Miller, Managing Partner of Tokyo.
Alastair Da Costa, Managing Director of DLA Piper’s Asian practice, added: “Japan remains a significant global economy and we are committed to further developing our Japan practice. The appointment of Henry and William is an important part of our strategy as IPT issues are so vital for Japanese companies particularly those operating internationally and seeking growth opportunities in emerging markets. We are delighted to welcome these practitioners to our firm who are so well known in this field of expertise.”
