(Tokyo and Los Angeles) November 9, 2010—DLA Piper today announced that Henry Koda and William L. Androlia have both joined the firm’s Intellectual Property and Technology (IPT) practice as Senior Counsel in Tokyo and Los Angeles. They join the firm from Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, LLP.
Koda, a Japanese authority on US patent law who has written 15 books and over 150 articles, opened Quinn Emmanuel’s Tokyo office and is now Manager of the Tokyo Intellectual Property Group at DLA Piper. His practice focuses on patent litigation/prosecution, and includes all aspects of international trade practice and high technology patent practice, including US-Japan patent, trademark and copyright litigations/applications, search, infringement analyses, and licensing. Androlia has an active international trade and high technology practice, including US-Japan patent, trademark, and copyright applications, searches, infringement analyses, licensing, and litigation and will work together with Koda to enhance and expand DLA Piper’s Tokyo Intellectual Property Group.

In August, DLA Piper announced the addition of Richard de Bodo’s 20-member team to DLA Piper’s Intellectual Property and Technology, Patent Litigation and Patent Prosecution practices in the US. De Bodo’s team together with Koda and Androlia add technical depth and experience to the firm’s electronics, life sciences, pharmaceutical, chemistry, biologics, and Internet practices, and also significant knowledge and experience in litigating and trying Hatch-Waxman and biologics cases, representing Japanese electronics and pharmaceutical companies, and representing Internet companies. The team includes lawyers and patent professionals who are fluent in both Japanese and English, with members in Los Angeles working seamlessly with the firm’s IPT team members located in Asia led by Matt Glynn, Partner and Head of Intellectual Property and Technology, Asia, Middle East and Africa. Glynn has recently relocated from the firm’s Dubai office to Hong Kong.

About the Lawyers
Henry Koda focuses his patent litigation and prosecution practice in various technical areas including the chemical and life sciences areas.
An author of 15 books, Koda is a professor at Soka Law School.
He is fluent in English and Japanese and is registered to practice before the USPTO. He is also a member of the New York State Bar.
Prior to joining Quinn Emmanuel, he and Androlia formed Koda & Androlia, a small IP boutique.
Koda received a B.L. from Meiji University Law School and a B.S. in chemistry from Gakushuin University. He has also taken a special course for NY Bar qualification at Pepperdine University Law School.
William L. Androlia was previously an electronic engineer working on communication satellites and deep space vehicles at Philco-Ford Space and Reentry Systems. He also served as an officer in the US Army Signal Corps and worked on the General Staff at Redstone Arsenal managing Army Missile Systems.
He is familiar with the electronic and mechanical arts and particularly with computers, computer software and peripheral equipment.
Androlia is an adjunct professor of US patent law at Pepperdine University Law School. He is a member of the American Bar Association, the Los Angeles County Patent Law Association and the US Patent Bar.
He is also admitted to practice before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court.
He received a J.D. from Loyola University, an M.S. from California State University, and a B.S. from University of California, Berkeley.
