Lateral Hire Continues Major Expansion of IP Practice
NEW YORK – March 10, 2009 – The international law firm of Chadbourne & Parke LLP today announced that Charles M. Fish has joined the Firm as counsel in the intellectual property practice in the New York office. Prior to joining Chadbourne, Mr. Fish was Vice President and Chief Patent Counsel for Time Warner Inc. in New York.
The hiring of Mr. Fish continues the expansion of the IP Group begun when John Squires, former Chief Intellectual Property Counsel for Goldman, Sachs & Co., joined the Firm in January. Mr. Squires co-chairs the Firm’s intellectual property practice with partner Walter G. Hanchuk and is helping lead an international expansion of Chadbourne’s IP capabilities.
“The addition of yet another high-profile intellectual property lawyer confirms our commitment to growing our IP practice to meet the increasing and complex needs of our diverse client base,” said Chadbourne Managing Partner Charles K. O’Neill. “Chuck brings a wide range of IP experience in the digital TV, consumer electronics, publishing and telecommunications industries, as well as hands-on knowledge of social networking and web-based technologies that will be invaluable to many of our clients.”
Mr. Fish, 47, spent nearly six years as Time Warner’s first Chief Patent Counsel, with responsibility for corporate patent strategy and operations, including litigation, risk analysis, licensing and procurement. He coordinated and oversaw a team providing legal services to seven divisions — each a Fortune 500 company in its own right — AOL, HBO, Time Inc., Time Warner Cable, Turner Broadcasting/CNN, Warner Bros. and Warner Music. His role in leading groups of companies to consensus on licensing IP embodied in standards and patent policy issues (including several influential U.S. Supreme Court amicus briefs) is well known.
“Chuck’s unique talents and experience bolster our IP Group’s reach and depth and provide added value to Chadbourne’s clients,” said Mr. Squires. Added Mr. Hanchuk: “Chuck represents yet another key addition to our growing team and we intend to continue to build out our international platform with the addition of high-profile, problem-solving attorneys.”
“Difficult economic and market conditions tend to increase the frequency and complexity of intellectual property issues, not diminish them,” according to Mr. Squires. “Chadbourne offers a ‘go-to’ team to help existing and prospective clients navigate these issues successfully, especially in uncertain times.”
Before joining Time Warner, Mr. Fish served as Vice President, Sector IP Law Director, for Motorola’s Broadband Communications Sector. He also served as Chief Patent Counsel of General Instrument Corporation, which later merged with Motorola. Additionally, Mr. Fish was a patent attorney at Sony Corporation of America.
Mr. Fish received a B.S. degree from the United States Naval Academy, and earned his Juris Doctor, cum laude, from Wayne State University Law School, where he was a member of the moot court national team. He is also registered with the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office.
