“Gravity” The Lawsuit

Gravity lawsuit

It seems that every good movie needs a good sequel and lawsuit.  In “Gravity’s” case, writer Tess Gerritsen is suing the movie’s producers, Warner Bros, claiming she is due several million dollars in profits from the successful film.

Author Tess Gerritsen has sued Warner Bros. claiming the studio owes her millions in profits from the Oscar-winning hit film “Gravity,” which she claims was based on a book she wrote and which had been bought by a Warner’s subsidiary in 1999 for a million dollars.

Gerritsen wrote the books upon which the TNT series “Rizzoli & Isles” was based.

AP report that Warner Bros. declined comment on the case, but spokesman Paul McGuire noted that in October Gerritsen told an audience at an Indiana public library that the film wasn’t based on her book.

” ‘Yea, ‘Gravity’ is a great film, but it’s not based on my book,” the Greencastle Banner-Graphic newspaper quoted Gerritsen as telling the audience. The paper noted the author said she had seen the movie, which starred Sandra Bullock, before her appearance.

Gerritson’s lawsuit states she believes “Gravity” director Alfonso Cuaron was attached to adapt the book into a screenplay without her knowledge years before the movie was actually made. The author sold the rights to her novel to a production company that was bought by Warner Bros. in 2008.

The novel and film are in fact similar, but with some key differences.

The novel features a female medical doctor trapped in space after an organism infects her fellow astronauts and kills them. Her husband, who is on Earth, fights efforts to leave his wife in space to die alone.

Toby Moffett will co-lead US legislative affairs and help coordinate firm’s activities in Africa

Washington, DC, 1 May 2014 – Mayer Brown, a leading global law firm, announced today that former US Representative Toby Moffett has joined the firm in Washington DC as a senior advisor in its Government & Global Trade group. Also joining Mayer Brown alongside Mr. Moffett are two experienced lobbyists from The Moffett Group, government affairs advisor Mickey Leibner and government affairs specialist Mike Kelley.

Mr. Moffett, who served four terms in the US House of Representatives representing Connecticut’s Sixth Congressional District, will co-lead the firm’s US legislative affairs activities with another former US congressman, David McIntosh, who represented Indiana’s Second District in the House of Representatives and also served in both the Reagan and Bush administrations. Mr. McIntosh has been a partner at Mayer Brown since 2001.

“We are delighted to have Toby join us,” said Mr. McIntosh. “He will add to an already strong government affairs team at Mayer Brown in Washington, Chicago, Los Angeles, Brussels, Dusseldorf, Beijing and Hanoi.”

Mr. Moffett will also focus his energies on Mayer Brown’s activities in Africa. He and his firm have extensive experience there over the past two decades, beginning in the early 1990s with a successful effort on behalf of the President of Angola to restore full diplomatic relations with the US. The Moffett Group has represented the Government of Morocco for more than a decade and has represented the governments of Kenya, Malawi, the Republic of the Congo, the Governor of the Central Bank of Somalia, and the President of the Somali state of Puntland.

“My decision to join Mayer Brown stemmed from my experiences in working with the firm on important projects during the past 20 years, as well as my desire to become part of a larger global practice,” said Mr. Moffett. “It’s very exciting to think about what we will do together.”

Elsewhere in Africa, Mr. Moffett has also represented Virgin Nigeria Airways, the South African Wine Industry Trust (SAWIT), the African Virtual University, and, most recently, TP Mazembe, the highly successful soccer club of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

“We are excited about adding Toby’s capabilities and his network of clients and contacts in Africa,” said Duane Layton, co-leader of Mayer Brown’s global Government & Global Trade group. “In his Africa role, Toby will work closely with our offices in Paris and London, as well as with our associate firm, Tauil & Chequer in Brazil, in Portuguese-speaking African nations.”

In the US, Mr. Moffett and his team have spent years representing Caithness Energy, the developers of the country’s largest wind project, and a number of other developers of wind, solar, and hydropower assets.

For five years, Mr. Moffett was one of the leaders of the coalition that helped win passage of the James L. Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act that brought health benefits to workers from the Ground Zero site and indemnity to the New York contractors who did heroic work immediately following the tragedy.

“Working alongside David McIntosh and the rest of our current legislative group, Toby and his team will add significant value to our clients,” said Mayer Brown partner Mickey Kantor, former US Secretary of Commerce and US Trade Representative.
