ATLANTA– LAWFUEL – Legal Business Newswire –i2Telecom International, Inc. (“i2Telecom®”) (OTCBB: ITUI), announced today that it has retained one of the world’s leading intellectual property law firms, Vinson & Elkins LLP (“V&E”), to investigate possible patent infringements regarding its recently allowed patent application on portable access Voice-over-Internet Protocol (“VoIP”) technology.
A pioneer in ultra-portable high-quality VoIP products and services, i2Telecom was notified in September that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (“USPTO”) had granted the Company a Notice of Allowance for its pending patents involving its Portable VoIP Service Access Module (“VSAM”) technology, also known as VoiceStick®. Based on the USPTO’s decision, i2Telecom believes that the patent could be issued before the end of 2007.
In October 2004, i2Telecom filed the first patent application on the VoiceStick®. Shortly thereafter, Internet Telephony Magazine named VoiceStick its “Product of the Year.” The VoiceStick® is a revolutionary device that turns any computer into your own personal telephone and the service provides the ability to turn any cellular phone into a world phone. The VoiceStick® is a USB device that allows the user to make calls anywhere in the world where you have access to a broadband Internet connection. Subscribers can also use a local direct inward dial (“DID”) number provided to make calls from their cellular phone.
Paul Arena, Chief Executive Officer of i2Telecom, said that “he has asked lawyers at Vinson & Elkins to undertake immediate efforts to identify possible violations of its intellectual property rights and, if necessary, to initiate legal proceedings against suspected infringers.” Leading the inquiry for V&E is David Weaver, a partner and co-chair of the 750 lawyer international law firm’s Intellectual Property and Technology Litigation Practice Group. Mr. Weaver, a former aerospace engineer at NASA, is widely considered one of the nation’s leading trial lawyers in the prosecution and defense of copyright and patent infringement.
“Vinson & Elkins, led by David Weaver, has a tremendous team of lawyers actively engaged in an effort to aggressively protect and enforce the intellectual property rights and assets of i2Telecom and its shareholders,” said Mr. Arena. “The USPTO’s recent issuance of a Notice of Allowance regarding our first VoiceStick® technology patent bolsters the Company’s ability to protect and enforce its intellectual property rights. Accordingly, we continue to evaluate opportunities to maximize and monetize the value of our intellectual property assets.”
