LAWFUEL – The Legal Newswire – Orlando, FL – Visiting U.S. District Judge U. W. Clemon, today sentenced David Williams, III to a term of imprisonment of 19 years and seven months, two years supervised release, and a $ 1100 special assessment for mail fraud, obstruction of justice,
and filing a false claim. David Williams III was found guilty on September 5, 2007, following a two-day jury trial.
According to court documents, Williams filed false liens and claims against the federal prosecutors who prosecuted him and the judge who had sentenced him in 2002 on drug charges. The defendant has been in prison since that time serving more than thirty years on the drug charges.
Evidence at the trial showed that the defendant was a member of the Redemptionist Movement which teaches that the government has no right to file criminal charges against individuals and counsels its adherents to file liens against federal officials under the Uniform Commercial Code.
The case was investigated by the United States Postal Service in Tallahassee, FL and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration in Orlando, FL. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Cynthia A. Hawkins.
