Irish Legal Costs Mount For Sexual Abuse Victims

LAWFUEL – Over €250 million will be paid out to lawyers representing people in Ireland who were sexually and physically abused in religious institutions.

Under the compensation scheme set up, lawyers fees account for nearly 20% of the overall cost.

The total cost of the redress scheme is now put at around €1.3 billion.

Over €700 million has already been paid out, including almost €100 million in legal costs.

The work of the board set up to hear cases and award compensation will not be completed until 2010.
