Only Boston-based Firm Ranked on List;
Yale Honor Follows Recent Recognition by Working Mother Magazine as Best Law Firm for Women
BOSTON– LAWFUEL – The Law Firm Newswire –Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo, P.C. has been named to Yale Law Women’s second annual list of the top ten family-friendly law firms, an honor that comes just months after the firm was named Best Law Firm for Women by Working Mother magazine. Mintz Levin is the only Boston-based firm to be recognized by Yale Law Women, an organization devoted to promoting the interests of women in law school and in the legal profession.
Promoting a healthy work-life balance has long been an important part of Mintz Levin’s tradition. The firm has many innovative policies and benefits that support a family-friendly culture. Mintz Levin was among the first law firms nationwide to introduce part-time and other flexible work arrangements designed to help all lawyers manage work and family responsibilities and other interests. The firm approved the first flexible work arrangement for a woman in 1984.
For the past several years, many of Mintz Levin’s employees have worked varied, reduced or flexible hours using telecommuting schedules or participated in job sharing arrangements. Attorneys at every level have worked part-time and or flexible schedules and several associates and counsel have been elevated to partner status while working part-time.
“It is truly an honor to be recognized for our continued commitment to maintaining a firm in which all of its members can succeed and thrive,” said Chérie Kiser, Managing Partner of the Washington, D.C. office, and Chair of the Diversity Committee. “Mintz Levin understands the importance of effectively blending one’s family life with his or her professional life and, as a firm, we are proud that we can help people achieve that goal.”
Among the numerous benefits that the firm provides to assist attorneys in blending family and work responsibilities include: backup childcare and generous parenting leaves – 12 weeks of fully paid leave for birth mothers and eight weeks of fully paid leave for fathers and non-birth mothers, attorneys may take four weeks of paid vacation time after their paid leave and may also take an extended unpaid parenting leave of up to one year, during which they may continue to participate in the firm’s health insurance plan and the firm extends its benefits to spousal equivalents or domestic partners.
Yale Law Women analyzed firms from the Vault.com’s Top 100 Law Firms and the Best of the Rest lists. The variables used were selected based on a survey of Yale Law School alumni, who ranked a list of family-friendly law firm policies in order of importance. Among the categories included were: maternity/paternity leave, childcare and alternative work arrangements, among others. All data was collected from the National Association of Law Placement (NALP) Directory.
The list is co-sponsored by the recently inaugurated Women’s Law School Coalition, an affiliation of top-tier women’s law student organizations. Represented in the Coalition are Yale, Boalt Hall (Berkeley), the University of Chicago, Columbia, Harvard, Northwestern, Stanford and the University of Virginia.
