LAWFUEL – The Law Firm Newswire – Paul, Weiss represented a class of songwriters and music publishers in a $130 million settlement with German media company Bertelsmann AG and certain of its U.S. affiliates. The settlement — which has been widely reported in the press, including the front page of yesterday’s Financial Times — follows more than four years of litigation involving Bertelsmann’s investment in Napster, the music “file sharing” service, which was shut down in July 2001 as a result of copyright infringement litigation in which the firm represented a similar class of plaintiffs.
The settlement, which was filed in the Northern District of California on Friday, is subject to court approval. The Paul, Weiss team included partners Lynn Bayard, Peter Felcher, Carey Ramos, Walter Rieman and Ted Wells, associates Allison Cohn, Aaron Delaney, Darren Johnson, Elizabeth Smith and Joanna Summerscales, staff attorney Joseph Samuel and paralegal Eric Rosoff; former Paul, Weiss associates Dawn Barker, Theo Cheng and Daniele Chinea; and former paralegals Cory Bortnicker, Matt Blumenstyk, Randall Carter, Virgil Esguerra, Lauren Mills, Delia Ugwu-Oju and Jorge Velazquez.
