The article reports that the Department of Justice’s antitrust division has implemented reforms aimed at cutting the cost that agency antitrust reviews impose on merging parties. The cost of filing a merger notification is about a quarter of a million dollars, but as Joe, the former head of the bureau of competition at the Federal Trade Commission, told the publication, it is not uncommon for the cost for complying with a second request for information to range from $3 million to $25 million. Second requests for information are used by antitrust agencies to examine competitive problems in mergers between competitors and other strategic combinations.
