LAWFUEL – Legal News Network – The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Common Knowledge Scholarship Foundation (CKSF) at Nova Southeastern University (NSU) will be announcing the kick off of the FBI-Safe Online Surfing (FBI-SOS) Internet Challenge on Wednesday, December 20, 2006 starting at 1:50 p.m. at West Miami Middle School (WMMS), 7525 Southwest 24th Street, Miami, Florida. WMMS is the first winner of the FBI-SOS Internet Challenge and in recognition of their achievement, the FBI-SOS trophy will be presented to the school and the five students with the top scores will be named.

The media is invited and encouraged to attend this event. Parking is available in front of the school. The doors to the auditorium will open at 1:15 p.m., so that cameras can be set up for the 1:50 p.m. start.

A total of 850 students at seven schools in Dade and Broward counties took part in the inaugural campaign that educates students about Internet safety in a fun and entertaining way. The students surfed the Internet at pre-screened sites, on a scavenger hunt for Internet safety clues to assist them in the challenge quiz. Along the way, the children learned important lessons on how they can protect themselves while engaged in web-based activities. The students took a quiz with their newly acquired Internet safety knowledge and the 135 students at West Miami Middle School had the highest score.

The FBI-SOS initiative was developed by the FBI Miami Division’s Crimes against Children Unit and the CKSF at NSU. It has been approved by both the Dade and Broward County School Boards. Information about the program can be found at www.fbi-sos.org.
