LAWFUEL – The Legal Newswire – A legal assistant terminated by one of Toronto’s top law firms while in the throes of battling breast cancer has filed a $500,000 wrongful dismissal suit against her former employer, a renowned specialist in intellectual property law that has represented a number of high-profile clients involved in the fight against cancer, the Toronto Sun reports.
One such client mentioned on its website is Pfizer, and another is the Royal Canadian Mint.
Pfizer is described by Forbes magazine as the “biggest of the big” when it comes to pharmaceutical companies, and one that, in 2005, announced that it was “pouring 12% of its $8-billion annual research budget into developing new cancer medicines — making oncology second only to heart disease as a priority.”
The Royal Canadian Mint, to great fanfare, put 30 million pink-ribbon 25 cents pieces into circulation last year, the pink ribbon recognized world-wide as the symbol of hope for breast cancer victims.
Susan Dynes, a 49-year-old single mother of one, is one of those breast cancer victims.
She began working for Bereskin & Parr, its website boasting of more than 65 lawyers, in June of 1996. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2000, and was let go, unexpectedly, she claims, in August of 2005 — her personal hope dashed.
