LAWFUEL – US Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has visited Baghdad for talks with US and Iraqi officials on his third visit to Iraq.
He was met by US General David Petraeus, the multinational force commander in Iraq, the US Department of Justice (DoJ) said in a statement.
Gonzales was also due to meet US Ambassador Ryan Crocker, justice department personnel in Iraq, Iraqi Supreme Court chief Medhat al-Mahmoud and the country’s human rights and interior ministers.
In the statement, Gonzales praised the work of DoJ employees in Iraq with helping that country rebuild its law enforcement and legal system.
Gonzales is under growing pressure from members of the US Congress to resign over his role in a possibly illegal warrantless surveillance program, and in sacking of nine federal prosecutors that many critics say was politically motivated.
