LexisNexis(TM), today introduced LexisNexis(TM)
CourtLink(R) Strategic Profiles. This application helps client development
professionals take a more strategic approach to identifying opportunities and
risk in the marketplace for more effective client development.

Strategic Profiles also helps litigators argue cases more effectively. It is being shown
at the annual American Association of Legal Librarians conference here.
Law firm marketing professionals can simply enter a public company name,
attorney or nature of suit to produce a strategic profile of client’s or
prospect’s litigation history, or more easily match its areas of specialty
with a company’s needs. The same tool also can help identify emerging
litigation trends and growth opportunities or flag emerging risk, based on the
nature of suits being filed in federal court. Law firms also can identify what
practice areas are on the rise within a U.S. District Court by analyzing
geographic litigation trends.

On the litigator’s side, CourtLink Strategic Profiles help an attorney
force better settlements and win more cases by helping them gain insight into
the other parties in the case, history and pattern of settlements, mediations
or motions to dismiss from other similar proceedings.

“This is a breakthrough,” said Michele Vivona, chief operating officer of
LexisNexis CourtLink. “Only 3.2 percent of cases make it to trial completion,
according to the Federal Judiciary’s 2001 Judicial Business Report. Even fewer
cases result in written or published decisions. Anyone depending only on
published sources for their litigation trend analysis — or to gain insight
into other parties involved in their case — is missing 97 percent of civil
litigation.”

CourtLink searches the most in-depth U.S. federal online database of court
records available, covering up to 20 years of civil cases.
During market testing with top U.S. law firms, client development
professionals and litigators found so much value in the idea of strategic
profiles that they asked CourtLink to train them manually to conduct the
searches, Vivona said. “This application will save them hours of time, and it
presents the report in graphs, data charts and other easy-to-understand
formats.”
