The Firm’s Diversity Committee provides San Diego minority organizations both financial and professional support
SAN DIEGO (October 7, 2010) – Luce, Forward, Hamilton & Scripps LLP today announced it will fund two $5,000 LFHS Scholarships. The scholarships, administered through the Earl B. Gilliam Bar Association (EBGBA) and San Diego La Raza Lawyers Association (SDLRLA), will be given to deserving law students who embody the Firm’s values by demonstrating both academic excellence and a commitment to community and public service. Since its founding, Luce Forward and its attorneys have consistently demonstrated a commitment to community service and diversity. The LFHS scholarships will be awarded at the SDLRLA annual dinner on October 9, 2010 and at the EBGBA annual dinner on November 6, 2010.
“Through these scholarships, we hope to enhance the opportunities for young attorneys within the minority communities where we work and live,” says Luce Forward Partner and Chair of the Firm’s Diversity Committee John T. Brooks. “In addition to our external commitment to diversity, Luce Forward’s goal is to reflect the diversity of our communities and to promote communication and understanding among all of those who work at our firm.”
To supplement the LFHS Scholarships, Luce Forward has committed to providing pro bono legal services to support the projects and initiatives of both the EBGBA and SDLRLA. Members of the Firm’s Diversity Committee have selected these minority bar associations as part of their continued outreach to become actively involved with local minority communities throughout California. Additional scholarships will be granted to similar groups in Los Angeles and San Francisco in 2011.
Luce Forward’s Diversity Committee is comprised of both minority and non-minority lawyers. The Diversity Committee addresses issues faced by women and minority attorneys, and involving differences among people including race, religion, age, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, language, medical condition or disability, and culture.
About Earl B. Gilliam Bar Association (EBGBA)
EBGBA is an Affiliate of the National Bar Association and the California Association of Black Lawyers. EBGBA (formerly know as the Association of Black Attorneys of San Diego) was established in 1976. EBGBA members strive to make positive contributions to the San Diego community through operating a six week Neighborhood Law School, organizing public forums and seminars, hosting annual Juneteenth Celebrations, and collaborating on events with other organizations. In addition, EBGBA is committed to encouraging law student achievement by awarding scholarships, establishing mentor-mentee programs, and hosting annual law student mixers. EBGBA seeks to facilitate law students’ success by inviting law students to join the organization as a student-members.

Formed in 1979, with a handful of Latino attorneys, San Diego La Raza Lawyers Association (SDLRLA) has grown to represent over three hundred Latino and Latina lawyers practicing in San Diego County. SDLRLA is one of 18 affiliate bar associations of the California La Raza Lawyers Association, which serves several thousand Latino lawyers practicing in the State of California. Its purpose is to advance the cause of equality, empowerment and justice for Latino attorneys and the Latino community in San Diego County through service and advocacy.
