Luce, Forward, Hamilton & Scripps LLP today announced it will fund a $5,000 LFHS Scholarship. The scholarship, administered through the John M. Langston Bar Association (JMLBA), will be given to a deserving law student who embodies the Firm’s values by demonstrating both academic excellence and a commitment to community and public service. Since its founding, Luce Forward and its attorneys have consistently demonstrated a commitment to community service and diversity. The LFHS Scholarships will be awarded at the JMLBA Annual Installation and Awards Gala on January 29, 2011.
“Luce Forward has always placed an emphasis on supporting diversity and the minority communities where its attorneys live and practice law,” says Luce Forward Partner and leading member of the Firm’s Diversity Committee Suzanne Badawi. “By working with the JMLBA to provide this new scholarship, we hope to increase opportunities for young lawyers who, like Luce Forward, are dedicated to diversity, their communities and public service.”
To supplement the LFHS Scholarships, Luce Forward has committed to providing pro bono legal services to support the projects and initiatives of JMLBA. Members of the Firm’s Diversity Committee have selected this minority bar association as part of their continued outreach to become actively involved with local minority communities throughout California. Additional scholarships were granted to the San Diego-based Earl B. Gilliam Bar Association (EBGBA) and San Diego La Raza Lawyers Association (SDLRLA) in 2010, and will be granted to similar groups in San Francisco in 2011.
Luce Forward’s Diversity Committee is comprised of both minority and non-minority lawyers. The Diversity Committee addresses issues faced by women and minority attorneys, and involving differences among people including race, religion, age, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, language, medical condition or disability, and culture.
About the John M. Langston Bar Association
The Langston Bar Association is the oldest bar association in California serving the African American legal community. It started as the “Langston Law Club” in 1943 by attorney Crispus Attucks Wright and other pioneering African American attorneys in Los Angeles. They founded the club in response to other bar associations’ policy of excluding African Americans as members. The Club later changed its name to the John M. Langston Bar Association.
