(LAWFUEL) – Malaysian arrested for importing heroin A 30-year-old Malaysian national has been charged with importing heroin into
Australia.
Customs and Border Protection officers at Sydney International Airport selected the man for a baggage examination after he arrived on a flight from Kuala Lumpur on Sunday 12 April 2009. During the examination, the officers became suspicious that the man may have been concealing drugs internally.
The man was referred to the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and taken to hospital for a medical examination. It will be alleged that the man passed 75 pellets containing approximately 375 grams of a powder believed to be heroin. The packages will undergo forensic testing to determine their exact weight and purity. The man was charged by AFP agents during a bedside court hearing in a Sydney hospital yesterday and is due to appear in court at a date yet to be fixed. He was charged with importing a marketable quantity of a border controlled drug, contrary to Section 307.2 of the Criminal Code Act 1995.
The maximum penalty for this offence is 25 years imprisonment and/or a $550,000 fine.
