Maryland’s former Lieutenant Governor to further strengthen the firm’s Washington, DC presence

Based in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office, he will focus on corporate securities, government relations and international affairs with an emphasis on Africa.
As the issuance of Congressional subpoenas continues to surge, Michael will also play a lead role in providing counsel to elected officials and executives brought before Congress.

Lieutenant Governor Steele rose to prominence in 2003 as the first African-American ever elected to statewide office in Maryland, and in 2006 was the state’s Republican nominee for United States Senate. Most recently, he was named Chairman of GOPAC, the premiere education and training center for Republican candidates for public office.
As Lieutenant Governor, Steele has a prodigious list of accomplishments: He led the fight to improve access to better-performing schools; worked alongside law enforcement officials to reduce crime and secure local communities; strengthened the state’s minority business program to foster greater entrepreneurship; and worked with Maryland conservationists to protect the environment for future generations. Steele was also deeply engaged in the state’s business and economic development activities, forging key international relationships to expand Maryland’s global economic interests.
In 2002, President George W. Bush appointed Mr. Steele to serve a term on the Board of Visitors of the United States Naval Academy. Other affiliations include the State House Trust, the East Baltimore Development Corporation, the Export-Import Bank Advisory Committee, The Johns Hopkins University Board of Trustees and the Prince George’s County Chapter of the NAACP.
Prior to his career in public service, Steele worked for the law firm of Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen, and Hamilton where he specialized in corporate and financial law.
Steele received a bachelor’s degree in international relations from Johns Hopkins University in 1981 and a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center in 1991. He also served as a seminarian in the Order of St. Augustine at Villanova University.
Among the distinguished awards and honors received by Lt. Governor Steele, he has been named a 2005 Aspen Institute-Rodel Fellow in Public Leadership and was awarded a Bethune-DuBois Institute 2005 Award for his work in the ongoing development of quality education in Maryland.
