(May 3, 2007, Chicago, IL) – LAWFUEL – The Law Newswire – Reed Smith LLP, one of the 15 largest law firms in the world, today announced the addition of Frederick H. Branding as a partner in its Health Care Practice Group in the firm’s Chicago office, effective May 1.

“Fred is a seasoned attorney whose understanding of FDA law in the context of high-stakes seizures, injunctions and prosecutions has earned him a well-deserved reputation as one of the industry’s go-to attorneys,” said Carol Loepere Head of Reed Smith’s Health Care Practice Group. “When corporations are involved in ‘bet-the-company’ FDA actions, they look for an attorney with experience litigating enforcement and injunctive matters and Fred provides that expertise. We are delighted to have him aboard to provide those critical services to our clients.”

Mr. Branding joins Reed Smith from the Chicago office of McGuire Woods LLP, where he specialized in counseling and advising medical products companies on FDA regulatory issues, as well as in providing civil and criminal defense counsel to companies and individuals facing government enforcement actions. From 1973 to 1990, he was an Assistant United States Attorney in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois, where he served in various capacities, including as Chief of the Civil Division from 1979 to 1983.

“Reed Smith has outstanding FDA and products liability capabilities, and with offices throughout the U.S. as well in the UK and Europe, it is well-positioned to represent today’s global health care corporations,” said Mr. Branding. “I am looking forward to teaming up with this outstanding group of attorneys, many of whom I have already collaborated with over the years.”

Trained as a registered pharmacist as well as an attorney, Mr. Branding brings more than three decades of legal practice experience to Reed Smith. He has received numerous accolades and citations, including awards from the Food and Drug Administration and the Department of Justice for outstanding litigation successes and contributions in the field of law enforcement.

Mr. Branding serves as an Adjunct Professor of Food, Drug and Cosmetic Law at both Northwestern University School of Law and John Marshall Law School. He has published numerous articles on FDA regulatory and compliance issues and is a frequent speaker at the Food and Drug Law Institute (FDLI), the Regulatory Affairs Professional Society (RAPS), the American Conference Institute (ACI), commercial conferences and professional meetings. A 1978 graduate of the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago-Kent College of Law, he received his B.S. in Pharmacy in 1968 and his B.A. in biology and chemistry in 1966, both from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.

“Adding Fred to our Health Care practice will greatly enhance our FDA capabilities while providing us with another partner with federal agency experience,” said Michael A. LoVallo, Managing Partner of Reed Smith’s Chicago office. “Many Reed Smith clients which are based in the Midwest will now have access to top notch FDA capabilities in close geographic proximity. Fred’s experience and expertise are an exceptional fit with our current firmwide capabilities in an area in which we expect considerable future growth.”
