Mother of Eight Killed in DUI in Bakersfield, CA

August 9, 2009 (by Horatio Algren) According to reports a 25 year old driver has been arrested after hitting and fatally injuring the mother of eight children.

According to the California Highway Patrol Maria Rodriguez age 54 was struck and killed while crossing a Bakersfield Street, when a driver allegedly driving under the influence passed a stopped vehicle waiting for the woman to cross the street.

The driver has been identified as Luis Munoz Jr. age 25, that swerved around another vehicle that was stopped allowing the woman to cross the street within the designated cross walk. Munoz then fled the scene of the accident and was stopped by Bakersfield Police a short distance away from where the hit and run took place.

Rodriguez who was fatally injured in the hit and run moved from Jalisco Mexico with her eight children and became an American citizen in 2004, which according to her children was her proudest moment.

Munoz has been charged with suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter while driving under the influence, hit and run and felony drunken driving. The 25 year old is currently being held in jail in lieu of $130,000 dollars bond.
