New Attorney Strengthens Bryan Cave LLP’s Risk Management Practice – American Law News

ST. LOUIS – March 1, 2010 – The international law firm Bryan Cave LLP announced today that Wayne Withers is joining the firm’s St. Louis office as of counsel. He joins the firm from Emerson Electric Co., where he served for many years as Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary.

Withers will practice with Bryan Cave’s White Collar Defense & Investigations, Corporate Finance & Securities and Transactions Client Service Groups. Withers primarily will focus his practice on the areas of corporate governance, compliance and risk management.

On matters concerning compliance and corporate governance, Bryan Cave regularly provides counsel on regulatory audits, company policies and codes of ethics. The firm has a deep understanding of all aspects of risk assessment and management.

During his time at Emerson, Withers implemented many of its compliance programs and mandated periodic audits of those programs to ensure that they accomplished their objectives and operated properly. Withers began his legal career in 1965 as a staff attorney at the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in Washington, D.C. He left the FTC in 1968 to join the law department at Monsanto Co. in St. Louis and joined Emerson in 1989.

Withers is very active in the legal community. He has spent considerable time working with the National Center for State Courts and is an active member of the Advisory Committee of the Washington Legal Foundation. He also has participated in the development of model state laws with the American Law Institute.

Withers has been a trustee of the Missouri Historical Society since 1995 and served as its chairman from 2002-2004. He was instrumental in raising capital to double the size of the society’s museum with a new addition that serves as an exhibition space for public use.

Withers received his J.D. in 1965 from Northwestern University School of Law and his B.A. in 1962 from the University of Oklahoma, Norman.
