LAWFUEL – The Legal Newswire – The Australian Government’s new Australian citizenship test has been approved by the Senate.
It means immigrants hoping to become citizens will soon need to be able to answer questions about the Australia’s history and geography, as well as our Government and traditions.
The new test also requires potential Australians to have a higher level of English than was previously required.
Labor has supported the legislation but the Democrats and the Greens claim it’s a waste of money.
‘This citizenship test is not necessary,’ Democrats Senator Andrew Bartlett said.
But Opposition justice spokesman Joe Ludwig says the citizenship test would serve its purpose if it helped migrants learn more about Australia and build a more cohesive society.
