NEW YORK, May 01, 2007 — The American Arbitration Association (AAA), the world’s leading provider of conflict management and dispute resolution services, announced yesterday the election of 6 new members of the AAA’s Board of Directors at its annual meeting held April 30 in New York.
The newly elected members of the board are as follows:
Gonzalo Biggs is a Partner in the law firm of Figueroa & Valenzuela in Santiago, Chile. Previously he was Legal Counsel of the Inter-American Development Bank in Washington D.C. Mr. Biggs has a vast experience in international trade and foreign investment and has been an arbitrator with the American Arbitration Association/International Centre for Dispute Resolution, World Trade Organization and International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Dispute on the World Bank. He is a Fellow of the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs of Harvard University. Mr. Biggs is a graduate of the University of Chile and George Washington University.
Harold Hongju Koh is Dean and Gerard C. and Bernice Latrobe Smith Professor of International Law at Yale Law School. Dean Koh clerked for both Judge Malcolm Richard Wilkey of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit and Justice Harry A. Blackmun of the United States Supreme Court. He worked in private practice in Washington, D.C. and as an attorney at the Office of Legal Counsel at the U.S. Department of Justice. Dean Koh has been awarded nine honorary doctorates and has received more than twenty-five awards for his human rights work. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, an Honorary Fellow of Magdalen College, Oxford, a Visiting Fellow at All Souls College, Oxford, and a member of the American Law Institute. He is a graduate of Harvard College, Oxford University (where he was a Marshall Scholar), and Harvard Law School (where he was Developments Editor of the Harvard Law Review).
Wilma A. Lewis is a Partner in the Washington, D.C. law firm of Crowell & Moring LLP. Prior to joining Crowell & Moring, Ms. Lewis served as the United States Attorney for the District of Columbia – the first woman and second African-American appointed by the President and confirmed by the United States Senate to hold that position. Among her many roles, Ms. Lewis is currently serving as Chairman of the District of Columbia Board of Elections and Ethics and as an adjunct faculty member in trial advocacy at The George Washington University National Law Center. She has also been the recipient of numerous prestigious awards and commendations. Ms. Lewis earned a BA degree, with distinction, from Swarthmore College in 1978, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and a JD from Harvard Law School in 1981.
Carole Malinvaud is a Partner at Gide Loyrette Nouel in Paris where she concentrates her practice in international litigation and arbitration. She has represented parties or served as arbitrator in many institutional and ad hoc arbitrations conducted in French, in English or in Spanish relating to infrastructure projects, protection of foreign investments, mergers, license and distribution contracts and joint venture contracts. Ms. Malinvaud holds an MA and a JD from the University of Paris II, and a LLM degree from Harvard law school. She is a member of the Paris and New York bars.
Tim Martin is Vice President & Special Counsel at Nexen. Mr. Martin has served as President of the Association of International Petroleum Negotiators (AIPN), President of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Landmen (CAPL) and a Director of the American Association of Petroleum Landmen (AAPL). He is a global faculty member of the Centre for Energy Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy (CEPMLP) at the University of Dundee, Scotland. Mr. Martin received his BA from Memorial University of Newfoundland and his LLB from Osgoode Hall.
Francis McGovern is a Professor of Law at Duke University School of Law and is a scholar, and teacher in the field of alternative dispute resolution. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Professor McGovern was among the first in the nation to write about and to use ADR techniques to avoid or to improve the litigation process. As a court-appointed special master or neutral expert, he has developed solutions in most of the significant mass claim litigation in the U.S. Professor McGovern received his BA from Yale University and his JD from the University of Virginia.
