Phoenix Tax Evader Receives $20,000 Fine

PHOENIX (LAWFUEL) – Darrell Forest May, 58, of Phoenix, was sentenced here on Monday, December 15, 2008, by U.S. District Judge Earl H. Carroll to five years probation and a $20,000 fine. May pleaded guilty on October 29, 2007 to Tax Evasion.

Between July 2000 and December 2005, May attempted to evade the payment of income taxes which he owed for tax years 1998, 1999 and 2000. To conceal his income and evade payment of taxes he filed false W-4 forms in which he claimed “exempt” status, filed false tax returns and claimed “0″ income, ceased the use of bank accounts levied by the IRS to avoid IRS collection efforts and used cash and money orders in financial transactions to avoid IRS collection efforts. May evaded the payment of a total of $98,770 in income taxes.

The investigation in this case was conducted by the Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation Division. The prosecution was handled by Kevin M. Rapp, Assistant U.S. Attorney, District of Arizona, Phoenix.
