Former DEA Attorney Adds Significant Experience to Health Law Group in Chicago
6 October 2011 – The national law firm of Quarles & Brady LLP announced that D. Linden Barber has joined the Firm’s Chicago office as a partner in the Health Law Group as Director of DEA Compliance Operations. Prior to joining Quarles, Mr. Barber was Regional Diversion Counsel for the Drug Enforcement Administration in Indianapolis, providing support to the Administration’s three Midwest Field Divisions.
In his role at Quarles & Brady, Mr. Barber will lead a team within the Health Law Group focused on advising the Firm’s clients on state and federal controlled substance compliance issues, in addition to representing and defending clients before federal and state administrative agencies.
“We are thrilled to welcome Linden to our team. Not only does he have an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the DEA’s controlled substance regulations, in some instances, he helped write them,” said Roger Morris, chairman of the Health & Life Sciences Industry Group. “His specialized expertise in the regulation of controlled substances will enable Quarles & Brady to provide full-scale, drug-related legal advice to our valued clients.”
As a top attorney for the DEA, Mr. Barber worked for 12 years on controlled substance diversion and regulatory issues, creating and implementing several new strategies and processes. Rising to the level of Associate Chief Counsel in Washington, D.C., he became the first-ever DEA attorney to work directly in a field office and focus exclusively on cases involving DEA registrants.
“Quarles’ premier pharmacy law practice and national presence provides the ideal platform to use my expertise in DEA compliance issues to assist members of the pharmaceutical and health care industry,” said Barber. “I look forward to working with my new colleagues to enable our clients to be industry leaders in DEA compliance while enabling innovation in the delivery of controlled substances throughout the supply chain.”
In addition, Mr. Barber currently is a reserve officer for the United States Army. He was an active duty officer for the U.S. Army from 1991 to 1999, serving in numerous positions for the Judge Advocate General’s Corps. He has received various honors throughout his career, including the Bronze Star for service in Operation Iraqi Freedom, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal for service at the National Security Agency, the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force National Award for Outstanding Innovative Pharmaceutical Investigation for Operation WebDrugs and the DEA Administrator’s Award for Group Achievement in Operation Lightening Strike.
He earned his J.D. from Notre Dame Law School and his B.A. degree from Tennessee Temple University. Mr. Barber is currently working on his Ph.D. in Leadership, which is expected in 2014.
