SAN DIEGO (September 22, 2011) –Luce, Forward, Hamilton & Scripps LLP announced today that the Los Angeles and San Francisco Daily Journal has named two Luce Forward partners, Darryl Steinhause and Christopher Healey, to its annual list of the “Top 100 Lawyers in California” for 2011.
Steinhause was instrumental in the highly complicated restructuring of over $2 billion in assets for Sunwest Management Company, allowing investors to roll up their investment or reinvest their proceeds on a tax deferred basis. Healey, a litigator also in the Firm’s San Diego office, helped lead a trial team in a class action lawsuit which resulted in a $677 million verdict against Skilled Healthcare Group, Inc.

In 2010, Steinhause was successful in restructuring the Sunwest Management Company bankruptcy, which originally involved a 214-property portfolio primarily consisting of assisted living facilities. Steinhause created innovative strategies for more than 1,800 investors which enabled them to recover a significant portion of their money and have the opportunity to be made whole in the future. For many of the investors, this represented a significant portion of their life savings.
Healey’s $677 million verdict against Skilled Healthcare Group, Inc. and 22 nursing facilities it operates in California, was the second largest verdict nationwide in 2010 and the largest ever against a nursing home chain. Its outcome is already changing practices in the nursing home industry to improve the service for patients living in skilled nursing and assisted living facilities.
