DENVER (Lawfuel) – On February 21, 2003, Terry Lynn Barton was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Richard P. Matsch to serve 6 years in federal prison followed by 4 years of supervised release for starting the Hayman Fire, the largest wildfire in Colorado history. Today Barton was released from the Federal Medical Center – FMC Carswell, in Fort Worth, Texas, where she served her 6 years imprisonment for the charge of setting Forest Service timber afire. As part of her sentence, Barton must now report to a federal probation officer within 72 hours of being released. She will then be supervised by the U.S. Probation Office for 4 years. Barton was also ordered to pay restitution to the U.S. Forest Service totaling $14,671,510. The order stated, however, that no payments on that amount will be required until the issue of state restitution is finalized. Once the state restitution is final, then the court will decide how and when the federal restitution should be paid. Barton must also address the state criminal matter, which was prosecuted by the Fourth Judicial District Attorney’s Office, which serves El Paso and Teller Counties.
“Terry Barton has served her time, but – like other serious crimes – the impact of the Hayman Fire lives on,” said U.S. Attorney Troy Eid.
