Professor Petra Butler has been appointed Dean of Law at the University of Canterbury.
A faculty member at the School of Law at Victoria University since February 2000 at the Faculty of Law, she also holds the positions of Director of the Institute of Small and Micro-States and Fellow at the British Institute of International and Comparative Law.
As Acting Dean and Interim Head of School (2021-2022), Professor Butler navigated the Faculty through various challenges including the COVID-19 pandemic and structural changes.
Her international experience spans five continents, leveraging her connections to enhance collaborations with governments, law firms, and diplomatic missions. These efforts have enriched opportunities for both international and domestic students.
At Victoria University of Wellington, and as Associate Dean, Academic Programmes, she contributed significantly to interdisciplinary teaching.
She is set to start her appointment at the University of Canterbury on February 5, 2024.
